Roof Replacement in Murfreesboro, TN After Storm Damage
A fallen tree damaged part of this Murfreesboro home's roof, but our inspection uncovered bigger concerns. See how we helped the homeowners move forward with a complete roof replacement, repaired damaged wood, removed a chimney, and installed new gutters.
A Fallen Tree Exposed Problems with an Aging Roof
After the January ice storm, these Murfreesboro homeowners reached out to us through a referral from a previous customer. A fallen tree had punched a hole through the roof's eave—the lower edge of the roof—and damaged nearby shingles and a gutter.
The visible storm damage was only part of the concern. The roof's age was unknown, and several areas had become soft and waterlogged. Moss had also built up across the roofing surface.
The homeowners had already filed an insurance claim before our initial inspection.
Why Replacing Only the Damaged Area Wasn't the Best Long-Term Fix
We inspected the shingles, roof edges, fascia boards, gutters, and chimney to understand the roof's overall condition—not just the spot where the tree fell.
With multiple sections of the roof already soft and deteriorating, a small repair would have addressed the immediate storm damage but left the larger roofing concerns in place.
Based on those findings, we recommended replacing the entire roofing system.
Insurance Covered the Tree-Damaged Area, but Not the Full Roof
We met with the homeowner's insurance adjuster to review the damage. The insurer determined that the claim would cover only the section affected by the fallen tree, not a complete roof replacement.
After discussing the roof's overall condition and the available options, the homeowners decided to move forward with a full replacement. They used the insurance funds toward the project and covered the remaining work under a separate contract.
That decision allowed the existing roof to be addressed as one complete project rather than repairing only the damaged section.
Inspect the Whole Roof
Review visible storm damage along with the condition of the older roofing materials.
Understand the Claim
Confirm which damage the insurer agreed to cover before deciding on the complete scope.
Plan the Replacement
Move ahead with the full roof replacement the homeowners chose, including additional work needed below the shingles.
New Shingles, Repairs Beneath the Surface, and Chimney Removal
During the replacement, our crew found several sections of rotten wood beneath the old roofing materials. We replaced the damaged wood to provide a sound surface for the new roof.
At the homeowners' request, we also removed the chimney located near the middle of the roof. The chimney was taken down below the roofline, and new roof decking was installed over the opening before the roof was sealed and finished.
The replacement included CertainTeed Landmark architectural shingles in Weathered Wood, QRRC synthetic underlayment, and ridge ventilation.

A Complete New Roof and a Fresh Look for the Home
The project finished with a new CertainTeed Landmark roof in Weathered Wood and new Linen White gutters. The updated colors gave the house a refreshed appearance while the replacement addressed the deteriorated roofing materials and damaged wood underneath.
The homeowners were especially pleased with their shingle color choice. According to the project notes, the roof replacement also led to additional home-improvement projects.
