Roof Inspection Phase:
The customer called our office because they were noticing roof granules coming out of their gutter downspouts. An initial roof inspection revealed that there was, in fact, a great deal of granules in their gutter system (1″+). The rood inspection also revealed that the TAMKO shingle was delaminating and exposing the internal fiberglass matting. The roof was only 7 years old and was an architectural style laminated shingle with a 30-year limited lifetime warranty manufactured by TAMKO.
We contacted TAMKO and initiated their warranty claim process. We removed several representative shingles from the roof and sent them to TAMKO to be forensically examined. They started the process to determine if there was a problem/defect with this particular shingle production run done in 2017.
While the warranty claim was being conducted, the church roof was actually struck by lightning (May, 2024). Another roof inspection was quickly done to assess the damages. The roof was then tarped to prevent water leaks through the hole caused by the lightning.
Our Solution
The results of TAMKO’s forensic investigation determined that there was an actual defect in the original shingles that were installed in 2017. In accordance with their manufacturers warranty, they issued a full credit for replacement shingles, as well as the labor to have them installed by us.
So we removed the entire existing roof system and replaced it with new architectural style shingles. The customer chose to have their new roof replacement done utilizing shingles made by GAF instead of TAMKO. We installed a whole new roof system with GAF Timberline HD architectural style shingles.
While we were replacing the roof system, we discovered some previously unknown leaking coming from the steeple structure. We were able to work with the customer to get these needed repairs/modifications completed at the same time as the roof replacement.
Final Results
The roof was restored to new condition, providing curb appeal and giving the customer peace of mind. Our office followed up with the insurance carrier and all depreciation was released after the storm damage repairs were completed. The customer received a 20-year workmanship warranty that is transferrable one time to any future owners of the property from CertainTeed.
